Basilica Church of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary

Basilica Church of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary

On November 2011, the Holy Father, Pope Benedict XVI, named Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary a minor Basilica.

The theological significance of the heart is rooted deeply in Christian symbolism and mysticism. The heart represents such related concepts as all-encompassing love, passion, self-sacrifice, martyrdom and strong conviction.

Scriptural references to both the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary abound. In Matthew 11:25, Jesus invites His disciples to “Learn from Me for I am meek and humble of heart”. And Luke 2:19 relates how ”Mary kept in mind all these things, pondering them in her heart”.

The great Franciscan theologian and Doctor of the Church St. Bonaventure wrote extensively of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary in the thirteenth century.
